Maheshwar
A serene temple town on the Narmada — the 18th-century capital of the saint-queen Ahilyabai Holkar, with riverside ghats, a hilltop fort-palace, and the famed Maheshwari handloom.
Maheshwar is Ahilyabai's Narmada city: the ghats and their evening aarti, the Ahilya fort-palace, the Rehwa Society reviving the Maheshwari saree, riverboat rides, and Malwa food.

About Maheshwar
Maheshwar is a small temple town on the north bank of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh, about 95 km south of Indore. It was the capital of Ahilyabai Holkar, the Maratha queen who ruled the Holkar state from here between 1767 and 1795, and much of the town dates from her time or soon after: the fort and the Rajwada above the river, and the broad stone ghats below, lined with temples and cenotaphs.
The fort, the Rajwada, Rehwa Society and the main ghats are all within a short walk of each other, so Maheshwar is easy to explore on foot. Spend the morning at the Rajwada and the looms of Rehwa Society, take a boat to the island shrine of Baneshwar in the late afternoon, and stay on the ghats for the evening aarti. Leave time to buy a Maheshwari saree, woven in the town since Ahilyabai's day, and to try poha jalebi for breakfast or a Malwa thali for lunch.
