About Ahilya Fort
Ahilya Fort stands on a rise above the Narmada and was the seat of Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled from Maheshwar between 1767 and 1795. The fort took its present shape during her reign, and its walls, gateways and temples look straight down on the ghats and the river. Some of her customs live on here: a morning ritual of shaping small Shiva lingas from river clay, begun in her time, is still carried out in the fort.
Inside the walls you can visit the Rajwada, with the queen's throne, the looms of Rehwa Society and temples such as the Ahilyeshwar. Parts of the fort are private and closed to visitors, so keep to the public courtyards and paths. For the best view of the fort itself, take a boat out on the river in the late afternoon.
