Skip the trip if the river is high or fast, especially in the monsoon.

Hold on to your phone and camera as you step between the boat and the rocks.

Wear sandals you can slip off, as you will remove them at the shrine.

Carry water, as there is little shade on the island.

Ask the boatman to come back along the ghats for views of the fort.

About Baneshwar Temple

Baneshwar Temple is a small Shiva shrine on a rocky island in the middle of the Narmada, just off the Maheshwar ghats. It is believed to be centuries old and was restored under Ahilyabai Holkar. Legend says it stands on the line that joins the centre of the earth to the Pole Star, which gives it special meaning for pilgrims.

The only way to reach it is by boat, and the short trip across the river is half the experience. From the water you get wide views back to Ahilya Fort and the ghats, and the island itself is usually quiet, with space to sit and watch the river.
