About the Maheshwar Ghats

The Maheshwar ghats are long flights of stone steps running down from Ahilya Fort to the Narmada. There are around 28 ghats along the riverfront, and the best known include Ahilya Ghat, Peshwa Ghat, Phanse Ghat and Mahila Ghat. Temples, carved cenotaphs and pavilions line the steps, and much of the riverfront dates from the time of Ahilyabai Holkar or soon after.

The ghats are busy from dawn, when pilgrims bathe and pray, until the evening aarti after sunset. In between, you can sit on the steps and watch river life, or take a boat to Baneshwar Temple and along the riverfront for the best view of the fort.
