About the Rajwada
The Rajwada is the Holkar palace inside Ahilya Fort, a simple two-storey wooden building on a stone base where Ahilyabai Holkar held court. Its best-known feature is her throne, the rajgaddi, now shown with a life-size statue of the queen. The throne is modest, a reminder of the simple life she is said to have led.
The Rajwada also has a small museum of objects from her time, from weapons to everyday items, along with portraits of the Holkar rulers and her palanquin. On Mondays, a palanquin procession in her memory usually sets out from the Rajwada to a nearby Shiva temple, a custom said to recall her own visits.
