For the satras

The satras are monasteries and homes for monks, so cover your shoulders and knees. Loose trousers, long skirts, kurtas and shirts with sleeves are ideal. You will take off your shoes before entering the prayer halls and some courtyards, so slip-on sandals save time. A light scarf is useful for sitting on the floor and for covering up if you arrive in a vest.

For the ferry

The open deck is windy. On winter mornings, from December to February, the fog is cold and damp, and a fleece or shawl helps. In the warmer months, a cap and sunscreen are enough. Keep shoes on during the crossing, as the deck and gangplank can be slippery.

For the villages

Paths in the Mishing villages and around the paddy fields are often muddy, especially after rain. Sandals with good grip or old trainers work better than delicate shoes. Climbing into stilt houses means bamboo ladders and steps, so trousers are more practical than long, loose skirts.

By season

October and March are warm and humid by day. November to February brings pleasant days and cool nights, so pack a sweater. From April to September it is hot and wet; choose quick-dry clothes, carry an umbrella, and expect mosquitoes near the water. Insect repellent is useful all year.

Traditional dress

The mekhela chador, a wrapped skirt and a draped upper cloth, is worn by Assamese women on special days and at satra festivals. Mishing women weave their own striped textiles on looms under their houses. The gamosa, a white cloth with a red border, is offered to guests as a sign of respect. Wear it around your neck and never use it as a towel for feet.

Where to buy

Mishing villages sell handwoven scarves and fabrics directly from the loom. Small shops in Garamur and Kamalabari have gamosas and basic clothing, but bring anything specialist from Jorhat.
