Where to Eat in Malvan

Malvan's best meals are in plain family restaurants in town, not at the beach. Lunch is the main meal, and the busy places fill up from about 1 pm.

Not sure what to order? The Malvan food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

Eating in town

The town centre, near the market and the bus stand, has most of the well-known Malvani restaurants. Hotel Chaitanya is the name most people give you first, known for fish thalis and fish curry. Atithi Bamboo is another long-running favourite for kombdi vade, thalis and sol kadhi. Both get crowded at lunch in the holiday season, so go early or expect a wait.

Eating at Tarkarli and Devbagh

Along the Tarkarli road, the choice is mostly resort kitchens, homestays and a few beachside restaurants. Sagar Kinara is the listed option near the beach for fish thalis and prawns. Many homestays cook Malvani meals for guests if you ask in the morning. This is often the best food on the strip, because it is made fresh in a home kitchen.

Home-style food

Malvani Katta is listed for traditional home-style thalis and, at times, modak. Small places like this are where you find the everyday dishes: fish curry with rice, a vegetable sukka, and bhakri.

How to order

A thali is the easiest start, because it gives you curry, fried fish, rice and sol kadhi on one plate. Fried fish is priced by size and type, so ask before you order the large pomfret or surmai. Say how spicy you want it.

When to go

Lunch is the big meal on the Konkan coast. Some kitchens run out of the best fish by mid-afternoon. Dinner is quieter and the menu may be shorter. During the June–July fishing ban, menus shrink and prices rise.

Plan with the food guide

If you are not sure what to try, read the Malvan food guide first. It explains each dish and where it is served.

Questions

Malvan — FAQ

Where should I eat in Malvan?

4 places are listed here, across 3 areas. Each entry says what that kitchen is known for rather than reprinting its menu, so pick by the dish you want and the area you'll be in.

What should I order in Malvan?

Start from the dishes rather than the restaurants — the Malvan food guide covers what each dish is and when to eat it, then links to the places that do it well.

Do Malvan restaurants take cards?

Larger restaurants usually take cards or UPI. Small places and homestays often prefer UPI or cash, so carry both.

Can I eat near Sindhudurg Fort?

There is little food on the island. Eat in Malvan town before or after the boat, since the restaurants are close to the jetty.

Are the restaurants open in the monsoon?

Most town restaurants stay open all year. Some beach places at Tarkarli close or cut their hours from June to September.
