A fishing town with a sea fort in its harbour

Malvan is a fishing and market town on the southern Konkan coast, in Sindhudurg district, about 505 km south of Mumbai by road. It is the largest town in the district, but it still runs on fish, coconuts and rice. Boats come in at the jetty each morning, and the island fort that gave the district its name sits a short ride offshore. Most visitors come for three things: the fort, the clear water off Tarkarli, and Malvani food.

How the coast is laid out

Think of it as one long strip running south from town. Malvan Beach and the Rock Garden are in town, with the jetty for Sindhudurg Fort close by. Tarkarli starts about 7 km south, a long sandy beach with the Karli river backwater running behind it. The road ends at Devbagh, a narrow spit where the river meets the sea. Most resorts and homestays sit along this Tarkarli–Devbagh stretch. Shared autos run the route, but a hired auto or your own car makes day plans easier.

The fort and the statue at Rajkot

Shivaji began Sindhudurg in 1664 to guard this coast against European traders and the Siddis of Janjira. In 2025 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Maratha Military Landscapes. On the mainland shore, the small Rajkot Fort now carries a 91-foot bronze statue of Shivaji, unveiled in May 2025. It replaced an earlier statue that collapsed in August 2024, and it has become a stop on most local tours.

The sea decides the season

Everything on the water depends on the monsoon. The port authorities usually stop the fort boats and water sports from late May to the end of August, and the sea is too rough to swim. Fishing also pauses from June to July. Diving and snorkelling are at their best between about November and April, when the water is calmest and clearest. Getting here

The nearest railway station is Kudal on the Konkan Railway, about 30 km away. Sindhudurg airport at Chipi is about 21 km from town, with a few scheduled flights; check current routes before you plan around it. Buses run from Kudal, Kankavli and Kolhapur.

Eating in Malvan

Malvan gave its name to Malvani cooking: coconut, kokum, red chilli and fish. Order a fish thali, kombdi vade and a glass of sol kadhi, and start with the food guide.

Questions

Malvan — FAQ

How many days do I need in Malvan?

Two full days covers the fort, a snorkelling trip, Tarkarli and a Devbagh boat ride. Add a third day if you want to dive or visit the temples inland.

Should I stay in Malvan town or at Tarkarli?

Stay in town for restaurants, the market and an early fort boat. Stay at Tarkarli or Devbagh for the beach and water sports. The two are about 7 km apart, so either works.

Can I visit Sindhudurg Fort in the monsoon?

Usually not. Passenger boats to the fort are normally suspended from late May to the end of August for safety. You can still see the fort from Malvan's shore.

What is the statue at Rajkot Fort?

A 91-foot bronze statue of Shivaji, unveiled in May 2025 at Rajkot Fort on Malvan's shore. It replaced a smaller statue that collapsed in August 2024.

Is Malvan good for non-swimmers?

Yes. Snorkelling trips give you a life jacket and a guide in shallow water, and trial scuba dives are run for beginners with an instructor. Always tell the operator you cannot swim.
