Local tips

Book snorkelling or diving through a licensed operator in Malvan or Tarkarli.

Go in the morning, when the sea is usually calmer and the water clearer.

Wear a rash guard to protect your back from sunburn while you snorkel.

Never stand on or touch the coral, even in shallow water.

Tell your guide if you are not a confident swimmer, so they stay close.

Avoid heavy meals just before the boat, as the sea can be choppy.

Leave a spare day in your plans in case the trip is cancelled for weather.

A protected stretch of sea

The Malvan Marine Sanctuary was declared in 1987. It covers about 29 square km of sea and rocky reef off Malvan, including the water around Sindhudurg Fort. It protects corals, reef fish and other shallow-water life on the rocky seabed.

Seeing it

You cannot walk into the sanctuary. You see it on a snorkelling or scuba trip. Snorkelling boats usually go to shallow water near the fort, where you float with a life jacket and a guide. Scuba trips go a little deeper to reefs and rocks further out. Tarkarli and Malvan have many operators, including MTDC's scuba institute at Tarkarli.

What you might see

Expect small reef fish, sea urchins, patches of hard and soft coral, and rocky ledges. Visibility changes a lot with the wind and tide. On a good day in winter it is clear. After rough weather it can be cloudy.

When to go

Trips usually run from about September or October to May. The clearest water is from November to April. Everything on the sea is normally stopped from late May to the end of August.

Visiting without harm

Do not stand on coral or touch it, and do not collect shells or anything else. Use reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash guard instead. Choose operators who brief you on the rules before you get in the water, and who do not drop anchor on the reef.
