Best Photo Spots in Malvan

Malvan's photos are about water: a sea fort, a river mouth and clear shallows. The light is kindest early and late, and the boats only run between about September and May.

Sindhudurg from the boat

The classic Malvan picture is the fort's long, low wall rising straight out of the sea. You get it on the ride out from the jetty, not from inside. Sit on the side of the boat facing the fort, and have your phone ready before you leave the harbour. Inside, the ramparts give views back to Malvan's shore. See the Sindhudurg Fort page for more.

Tarkarli's long beach

Tarkarli is a wide, flat beach lined with casuarina and coconut trees. Early morning is the time for clean sand and pale blue water. By late morning the water-sports area fills with boats and people. Walk away from the ramps for an empty stretch.

Devbagh, where the river meets the sea

At Devbagh, the Karli river runs out past a sandy spit. From a boat you can frame the palm-lined point with the open sea behind it. The sandbank locals call Tsunami Island changes shape with the tide, so it looks different each time.

Rock Garden at sunset

The Rock Garden is a small seafront park on the rocks beside Chivla beach in town. It faces west, which makes it Malvan's easiest sunset spot. Watch your footing on wet rock when the waves are up.

Under the water

Snorkelling and dive boats cross the Malvan Marine Sanctuary near the fort. Operators often sell underwater photos. If you bring your own camera, use a proper waterproof case and a wrist strap.

A few rules

Ask fishermen before photographing them at work, especially at the jetty when the catch is landing. Drones need permission near the fort and the navy's coastal areas, so check before you fly. Salt spray gets into everything, so wipe your lens after each boat ride.
