Local tips
Go on the first boats of the morning, before the day-trippers arrive from Tarkarli.
Agree on your return time with the boatman before you step onto the island.
Carry drinking water, as there is little to buy inside the fort.
Wear water sandals, because you may step onto wet rock at the landing.
Take off your shoes at the Shivrajeshwar temple and ask before photographing inside.
Keep children away from the rampart edges, which have no railings in places.
Do not plan a visit between late May and the end of August, when boats are normally stopped.
Shivaji's sea fort
Shivaji laid the foundation of Sindhudurg on 25 November 1664 on Kurte, a rocky island just off Malvan. It took about three years to build. The fort was meant to counter the European trading powers and the Siddis of Janjira along this coast. Its walls run for about 3 km around the island and are roughly 30 feet high. In 2025 Sindhudurg became part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Maratha Military Landscapes.
Getting there
Boats leave from the Malvan jetty, close to the town centre. The ride is short, and the entrance is hidden between the bastions, so you only see the gate as you get close. Boats run in the daytime from about September to May. They are usually stopped from late May to the end of August, when the sea is too rough.
What to see inside
Inside the walls is the Shivrajeshwar temple, dedicated to Shivaji, said to have been built by his son Rajaram. A few families still live on the island and look after its temples. Look for the prints of a hand and a foot set into the wall, said to be Shivaji's. There are also freshwater wells, which is surprising on a sea island. Walk part of the rampart for views of Malvan and the open sea.
Snorkelling nearby
Many boats combine the fort with snorkelling in the shallow, clear water near the island. It is part of the Malvan Marine Sanctuary, so keep off the coral and do not collect shells.
Before you go
The island has little shade and few facilities. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Boatmen usually give you a set time on the island, so agree on the return time before you step off.
