Local tips
Book dive trips a day ahead in the busy season, as morning slots fill first.
Choose a licensed operator and check that the boat carries enough life jackets.
Walk south from the water-sports area for a quiet stretch of sand.
Take a backwater boat on the Karli river in the late afternoon, when it is cooler.
Do not swim near the river mouth, where the current is strong.
Carry reef-safe sunscreen and reapply after every swim.
Leave a spare day in case a dive is cancelled because of wind or poor visibility.
A long, clean beach
Tarkarli is about 7 km south of Malvan town. The beach is long, flat and sandy, lined with casuarina and coconut trees, and the water is often clear and pale blue in the dry months. Behind it, only a road's width away, runs the Karli river backwater. That mix of sea on one side and river on the other is what makes the area special.
Diving and snorkelling
Tarkarli is the base for most scuba and snorkelling in Maharashtra. MTDC, the state tourism corporation, runs its scuba institute here, and many private operators offer trips too. Beginners can do a trial dive with an instructor, and qualified divers can book reef dives. Most trips head out to rocks and reefs near Sindhudurg Fort. The season usually runs from about September or October to May. The clearest water is from November to April.
Water sports and backwater boats
The beach has a busy water-sports area with speedboats, banana rides and parasailing. Houseboats and small boats also run on the Karli backwater, a calmer trip through mangroves and fishing villages. All sea activities usually stop from late May to the end of August.
Where to stay
Tarkarli has the MTDC resort and many homestays and small resorts along the road to Devbagh. Staying here puts you close to the dive operators, who often pick up early in the morning.
Safety
Swim only where lifeguards or operators are present, and never in the monsoon. Currents near the river mouth can be strong.
