🌧️ Monsoon

Some of the heaviest rain in India, from June to September: thick mist, full waterfalls and green hills, but slippery paths and landslides on the ghat roads. Weekends bring heavy traffic, and in the wettest towns many viewpoints, boat rides and hotels close.

October to February

The rains usually clear in October and the forest is still green. Days are warm and dry, and nights are cool, with January lows around 13 °C. Views from Panorama Point are at their clearest in these months, and the full toy-train service from Neral normally returns in October or November. This is also when the long weekends, Diwali and the Christmas to New Year week fill the hotels, so book ahead.

March to May

The hill is dry and the paths are dusty. Afternoons can go past 30 °C, though it stays cooler than Mumbai, which is why the town was built as a summer retreat. May school holidays bring families from the city. Start walks early and rest through the middle of the day. Mango ice cream is at its best now.

June to September

This is the monsoon, and in the Western Ghats it is heavy. June alone brings more rain than many cities get in a year, and July is wetter still. Cloud often covers the points, the red paths turn slippery, and the Neral to Aman Lodge section of the toy train is usually suspended from June. A shuttle still runs between Aman Lodge and Matheran. Charlotte Lake fills and spills over its dam, and small streams run everywhere. Bring rain gear, expect leeches on forest walks, and avoid cliff edges in poor visibility.

Weekday or weekend

Matheran is a weekend escape for two very large cities. Saturdays, Sundays and holiday weeks are crowded at the station, in the bazaar and at the popular points. The same hill on a Tuesday is quiet. If you can choose, come midweek.

Sunrise and sunset

Whatever the season, the first and last hours of daylight are the best time to be out. Midday is for lunch and a rest. See the photo spots for which point suits which hour.

Questions

Matheran — FAQ

Is Matheran worth visiting in the monsoon?

Yes, if you want mist, green forest and streams more than views. Paths are muddy, cloud often hides the valleys, and the toy train from Neral is usually suspended, so allow extra time.

When does the Neral–Matheran toy train restart after the rains?

Usually between mid-October and early November, depending on track repairs after the monsoon. In 2025 it resumed on 6 November. Check Central Railway announcements for the current year.

Which months are busiest in Matheran?

Diwali, the Christmas to New Year week, the May school holidays and long weekends. Book rooms well ahead for these dates and expect queues for the train.
