Best time to visit Mathura

Mathura and Vrindavan are best from October to March, when days are mild. The calendar matters as much as the weather, because Holi, Janmashtami and the New Year week bring crowds that change every plan.

❄️ Winter

Recommended

Oct – Mar

Warm in October and March, cool and mostly dry from November to February — the comfortable peak season, with crisp mornings and evenings.

Pack: light layers with a jacket or shawl for early mornings and after dark.

☀️ Summer

🌧️ Monsoon

Warm and humid with on-and-off showers that cool the air and green the gardens — rain rarely lasts all day.

Pack: a compact umbrella or light rain shell, quick-dry clothes and grippy footwear.

October and November

The heat breaks in October and the air clears. This is Kartik, the lunar month many pilgrims spend in Vrindavan, offering small lamps to Krishna in the evenings. Diwali and Govardhan Puja fall in this season, and Govardhan, about 25 km away, fills with pilgrims walking round the hill. It is a lovely time to visit, but book ahead.

December to February

Days are pleasant, but nights turn cold and fog often settles over the Yamuna plain in the early morning. Fog can delay trains and slow the expressway, so leave time in your plans. Banke Bihari names 20 December to 5 January as one of its peak rush periods, and the lanes are packed over New Year. Weekdays in late January and February are quieter.

March and Holi

Holi in Braj lasts more than a week. Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon, flower Holi at Banke Bihari and the colour days in Mathura and Vrindavan draw huge crowds. Hotels fill and prices rise. If you want calm temples, come in early March before the festival or in the weeks after it.

April to June

This is the hot season. Midday temperatures pass 40 °C and the marble courtyards burn bare feet. If you come now, visit temples at opening time and after sunset, and rest through the afternoon.

July to September

The monsoon cools the air but brings sticky humidity and mud in the lanes. In a heavy year the Yamuna rises over the ghats: in September 2025, Vishram Ghat and several Vrindavan ghats were under water and bathing was banned. Boat rides stop when the river is high. Janmashtami, usually in August or September, fills both towns completely, and the swing festivals of Shravan draw crowds to Banke Bihari and Dwarkadhish.

Questions

Mathura — FAQ

Is Holi a good time for a first visit?

It is unforgettable, but not easy. Crowds are dense, hotels fill early and some temples are hard to reach. If you want to see the temples calmly, come in another month and treat Holi as a separate trip.

Which days are busiest at Banke Bihari?

The temple lists Ekadashi, full-moon and new-moon days, weekends, public holidays, festival periods and 20 December to 5 January. Weekday mornings at opening time are usually calmer.

Does winter fog affect travel to Mathura?

Often, in December and January. Early trains run late and driving on the expressway slows down. Plan morning darshan for the second day rather than the day you arrive.

Can I take a boat on the Yamuna in the monsoon?

Only when the river is at a normal level. When it rises, boats are stopped and the ghats may be closed. Check at Vishram Ghat on the day.
