Where to Eat in Mathura
Two towns, one pilgrimage
Mathura and Vrindavan sit on the Yamuna about 12 km apart by road, and most visitors treat them as one trip. Mathura is the older, busier district town, held to be the place where Krishna was born. Vrindavan, to the north, is where he is said to have spent his childhood, and it has thousands of temples to Radha and Krishna. Mathura is about 160 km south-east of Delhi and about 60 km from Agra, so many people come for a single day. A night or two lets you see the temples at the hours they are actually open.
Mathura: the birthplace and the river
In Mathura the two fixed points are Krishna Janmabhoomi, the walled temple complex over the cell where Krishna is believed to have been born, and Vishram Ghat, the main ghat on the Yamuna and the place for the evening aarti. Between them run the old bazaar lanes. The Dwarkadhish temple, built in 1814, is a short walk up from the ghat. The Government Museum, founded in 1874, holds some of the finest early sculpture in India, from the Kushan and Gupta periods, and is a good place to spend a hot afternoon.
Vrindavan: temples by the clock
In Vrindavan, Banke Bihari is the crowded heart of the old town, reached through narrow lanes. ISKCON's Krishna Balaram Mandir opened in 1975 and keeps a steady round of kirtan. Prem Mandir, a white marble temple finished in 2012, is lit in changing colours after dark. Most temples close for three or four hours in the middle of the day, so plan mornings and evenings around darshan and rest at noon. E-rickshaws are the usual way between temples.
Rules that shape the day
Phones, bags and cameras are not allowed inside Krishna Janmabhoomi, and lockers are near the entrance. Cover shoulders and knees at every temple and expect to leave shoes at the gate. Meat and liquor are not sold in the pilgrimage areas of either town, so plan on vegetarian meals throughout. In the lanes near Banke Bihari, monkeys snatch glasses and phones, so keep both zipped away.
When to come
October to March is the comfortable season, though December and January bring cold nights and fog. Holi here runs for more than a week, starting with Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon, and Janmashtami fills both towns in August or September. Summer days pass 40 °C, and in a heavy monsoon the Yamuna can flood the ghats, as it did in September 2025. Read best time to visit and events and festivals before you book, and see what to eat for pedas, kachori and lassi.
Questions
Mathura — FAQ
How far is Vrindavan from Mathura, and how do I get between them?
About 12 km by road. Autos, e-rickshaws and taxis run between the two, and the trip usually takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Inside Vrindavan, e-rickshaws are the easiest way between temples.
Can I see Mathura and Vrindavan in a day trip from Delhi or Agra?
You can, but it is a long day, and most temples close for several hours around midday. One night lets you catch an evening aarti and the Prem Mandir lights, then an early darshan the next morning.
Can I take my phone into Krishna Janmabhoomi?
No. Phones, cameras and bags, including small handbags, are not allowed inside the complex. Use the lockers near the entrance and carry only what you need.
Can I get meat or alcohol in Mathura and Vrindavan?
Not in the pilgrimage areas of the two towns, where the state has banned their sale. Restaurants near the temples are vegetarian, and many cook without onion or garlic.
What else in Braj is worth a trip from Mathura?
Govardhan, about 25 km west, where pilgrims walk the roughly 21 km path around the hill. Barsana and Nandgaon, about 45 to 55 km away, are the villages of Lathmar Holi. Gokul, across the river, is linked to Krishna's infancy.
