Local tips
Come for the early morning aarti if you want the temple at its most devotional.
Leave shoes at the counter by the gate, and keep socks on in winter where allowed.
Visit the samadhi by the entrance before the main hall, while it is quiet.
Book lunch or dinner at Govinda's around the temple's midday closing.
Sit to one side of the hall during kirtan, and join in only if you wish.
Ask a volunteer before photographing the altars, as rules can change.
Buy beads and books at the temple shop rather than from sellers outside.
Opened in 1975
The ISKCON temple in Vrindavan is properly called the Krishna Balaram Mandir. It stands in the Raman Reti area and was opened on Ram Navami in April 1975 by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. The complex was completed in 1977.
Three altars
The central altar holds Krishna and his brother Balarama. On the right are Radha and Krishna as Radha Shyamsundar, with the gopis Lalita and Vishakha. On the left are Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda, the saints of the Bengal devotional tradition that ISKCON follows. The curtains open and close at set times through the day for darshan and aarti.
The samadhi
By the entrance is the samadhi of Prabhupada, a shrine of white marble built in his memory. Prabhupada spent his last days in Vrindavan, and many visitors stop at the samadhi first. It is usually quieter than the main hall.
Kirtan all day
Chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra goes on through much of the day, and the temple is busy from the early morning aarti, held at about 4:30 am. Visitors from abroad often find this the easiest temple in Braj to understand, as signs, talks and staff often use English as well as Hindi.
Around the temple
The complex has a guesthouse, a shop for books and beads, and Govinda's restaurant for a sattvic vegetarian thali. The temple marks all the Braj festivals, and Kartik, which it calls Damodar month, is one of its busiest seasons.
