Best Photo Spots in Mathura

Photography in Braj is mostly about the outside of temples, the lanes that lead to them and the river at dusk. Several of the most important shrines do not allow phones or cameras inside, so plan each shot for the approach and the gate.

What you can and cannot shoot

The rules change from temple to temple. At Krishna Janmabhoomi phones and cameras are not allowed past security at all, so the only photo is the gate from the street. At Banke Bihari the deity is not to be photographed, and the crush inside leaves no room to try. Prem Mandir allows phone photos in its gardens, and ISKCON is relaxed in the courtyard. When in doubt, look for a sign or ask the nearest volunteer.

Evening on the Yamuna

Vishram Ghat is the best river scene in Mathura. At sunset the aarti lamps are lifted over the water and small leaf-boats of flowers and diyas float away. Hire a boat for a few minutes before the aarti starts and shoot back at the steps, the temple fronts and the flames reflected in the river. From the steps, sit a few rows above the priests and turn the flash off.

Prem Mandir after dark

Prem Mandir is built for evening photos. The white marble cycles through colours after sunset, and the lawns in front hold life-size scenes from Krishna's stories. Arrive before dusk to pick a spot on the main path, then stay for the light show. A phone on night mode does better here than a flash.

Mornings in Vrindavan

Vrindavan's lanes photograph best early, when milk sellers, flower stalls and pilgrims with tulsi beads fill the frame and the light is still soft. ISKCON's marble courtyard is calm after the early aarti. By late morning the lanes near Banke Bihari are too packed to lift a camera.

People

Ask before photographing sadhus, pilgrims or the widows who sing at the bhajan ashrams. Many will agree; some will say no, and that is the end of it. Do not photograph anyone mid-ritual at the ghats.

Holi with a camera

In Holi week, colour gets into everything. Put the phone in a zip bag or a waterproof pouch, wrap a camera in a rain cover and keep a lens cloth handy. Shoot from a doorway or a raised step rather than the middle of a lane.

Questions

Mathura — FAQ

Can I take photos inside Krishna Janmabhoomi?

No. Phones and cameras must go in the lockers before security, so the only photo is of the gate and the street outside.

Is photography allowed at Prem Mandir?

Phone photos in the gardens and around the temple are generally fine. Professional cameras and tripods may need permission, and photos inside the shrine may be stopped.

How do I keep a phone safe from Holi colour?

Seal it in a zip bag or waterproof pouch, and keep it in an inside pocket between shots. Dry colour gets into ports and buttons, and wet colour stains screens and cases.

Can I fly a drone over the ghats or temples?

Assume not without permission from the local authorities. The temples are crowded, security is tight around Krishna Janmabhoomi, and police stop unannounced drones.
