Local tips
Reach the gardens by dusk so you can see the carving in daylight and then stay for the lights.
Deposit your shoes at the free counter and keep the token in a secure pocket.
Walk the full circuit of the temple for the carved panels on the outer walls.
Use a phone on night mode for the lit temple rather than a flash.
Expect the biggest crowds on weekends and holidays, especially in the evening.
Carry socks in winter, as the marble gets very cold after dark.
Combine it with ISKCON, which is a short e-rickshaw ride away.
A modern marble temple
Prem Mandir, the Temple of Divine Love, was founded by the spiritual teacher Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj. Work began in 2001 and the temple opened in February 2012, after about 12 years and the work of around a thousand artisans. It stands in about 55 acres of gardens on the edge of Vrindavan.
Two floors, two couples
The ground floor is dedicated to Radha and Krishna and the upper floor to Sita and Rama. The white marble is carved inside and out with scenes from Krishna's life, in a style drawn from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Next to it is a huge pillar-less satsang hall that can seat about 25,000 people.
Stories in the garden
The lawns in front hold life-size tableaux of four of Krishna's stories: Jhulan, the swing; Govardhan, where he lifts the hill; the Raas dance with the gopis; and the defeat of the serpent Kaliya. Families pose in front of each one.
After dark
Most people come in the evening. After sunset the whole temple is lit and cycles through colours, and a light show runs for about half an hour, usually starting between 7 and 8 pm depending on the season. Arrive by dusk to walk the gardens first and find a place to stand.
Visiting
Entry is free. The temple opens in a morning and an evening session and closes in between. Shoes go in a free deposit near the gate, and you walk the marble barefoot. In summer the stone is hot until the sun goes down.
