About the Raja Gopura

The Raja Gopura is the tall gateway tower at the entrance of the Murudeshwar Temple. At 20 storeys it is among the tallest temple gopurams in India, and its carved and painted tiers are visible from far along the coast. Two life-size elephant statues stand at its base.

What makes it different from most gopurams is the lift inside, which takes visitors up to a viewing level near the top. From there you look straight across at the 123-foot Shiva statue, down onto the headland and out along the beaches and fishing boats of the coast. Lift timings and tickets are separate from temple darshan, so check them on the day.
