About Murudeshwar Temple & Shiva Statue
The Murudeshwar Temple stands on Kanduka Hill, a rocky headland with the Arabian Sea on three sides. It is dedicated to Shiva as Murudeshwara and is linked to the legend of the Atmalinga, the same story that connects it to Gokarna up the coast. Behind the temple, a 123-foot seated Shiva looks out over the headland and is often described as the second-tallest Shiva statue in the world.
The grounds around the statue are lined with sculptures from Hindu legends, and the 20-storey Raja Gopura at the front has a lift to a viewing level. Since June 2025 the temple has asked visitors to wear traditional dress in its inner areas: a dhoti or full-length trousers for men and a saree or salwar kameez for women.
