Local tips
Start at Kulri in the late afternoon so you reach the valley-facing stretch around sunset.
Ask a local to point out the camel rock, as it only looks like a camel from one spot.
Walk quietly in the old cemetery and keep off the graves.
Carry a torch or use the Mall to walk back after dark, as parts of the road are poorly lit.
Take a warm layer, as the shaded north side stays cool even on sunny days.
Agree the price and route before taking a pony ride.
Come early in the morning if you want the road almost to yourself.
A walk above the Mall
Camel's Back Road is a loop of about 3 km that leaves the Mall at Kulri Bazaar and rejoins it at Library Chowk. It runs along the north side of the hill, so while the Mall is packed and noisy, this road is quiet, shaded and mostly level. Many residents use it for their morning walk. You can do the whole loop in about an hour at an easy pace, with stops.
The camel and the cemetery
The road is named after a rock outcrop that, from the right spot, looks like the hump and head of a sitting camel. It is easy to miss; look for the small crowd with cameras. Halfway round is the Camel's Back Cemetery, opened in 1828 and one of the oldest in the hills. Among those buried there is John Lang, the Australian lawyer who represented Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. The gate is not always open; if it is, walk quietly and do not climb on graves.
Sunset
Parts of the road face west over the hills, and in the evening people stop at the railings to watch the sun go down. From about October to January, look for the winter line, a thin band of colour along the horizon just after sunset. It does not appear every evening.
Getting around
You can join the road at either end. Starting from Kulri and walking towards Library puts the best sunset stretch near the end. Ponies are sometimes offered for rides along the road. After dark, the road is poorly lit in places, so carry a torch or walk back along the Mall.
