Local tips
Take the first ropeway rides of the morning for the clearest peaks and the shortest queue.
Check the ropeway is running before you queue, as it stops in strong wind and heavy rain.
Walk up the footpath if the queue is long and you are fit, as it is steep but short.
Look south for the valley and north for the snow peaks, which fade by afternoon.
Agree the price first at the costume and photo stalls at the top.
Carry a warm layer, as the exposed top is windy.
Pair it with a stroll on the Mall or Camel's Back Road, both close to the ropeway.
The noon gun
Gun Hill, at about 2,024 m, is the second-highest point in Mussoorie after Lal Tibba. In the British years a cannon was fired here at midday so that residents could set their clocks, and the name stuck. Today the hilltop is a small, busy area of viewpoints, snack stalls, costume photo booths and small rides.
The ropeway
Most visitors go up by the short ropeway, about 400 m long, that leaves from the Mall near Kulri. The ride takes a few minutes and gives a good view back over the rooftops. It usually runs through the day into the early evening, and times change with the season and the weather. It can stop in strong wind or heavy rain. A steep footpath also climbs from the Mall if you would rather walk.
The view
On one side you look down over Mussoorie, the Doon valley and the lights of Dehradun at night. On the other, on a clear day, you can see a line of Himalayan snow peaks. The peaks are clearest in the morning, especially in autumn and after rain. By afternoon they are often lost in haze.
Crowds
Gun Hill is one of the busiest spots in town. On summer weekends and holidays the queue for the ropeway can be long, and the top gets crowded. Come early on a weekday for the best chance of a clear, calm view. Sunset is also popular, with warm light over the valley.
Nearby
The Mall is right at the bottom, so combine Gun Hill with a walk along it, or with Camel's Back Road, which starts at Kulri close by.
