November to February: the good months

Days are sunny and warm, and nights are cool; December averages about 13 °C at its coolest. This is the time for long days on foot, sunsets at the lakes and safaris at Tadoba and Pench. Oranges are in the markets from November. The Winter Session of the state legislature usually sits in Nagpur in December, so hotels near Civil Lines fill and some roads close for security.

October and March: warm edges

October starts humid after the rains and dries out as the month goes on. It is also when Nagpur holds Dhammachakra Pravartan Din at Deekshabhoomi, the city's biggest gathering. March is sunny and already hot by the afternoon, and the sweet February–March orange crop is on sale.

April to June: serious heat

This is not an ordinary hot season. Average May highs are above 43 °C, and the city recorded 47 °C on 30 May 2024. Hot winds blow through the afternoons. If you must come, sightsee from dawn to about ten and again after five, drink more water than you think you need, and rest indoors in between. Tiger sightings at nearby reserves are good in this season, because animals come to the waterholes, but safaris are hard going.

Late June to September: monsoon

The rain usually arrives in the second half of June. July to September bring most of Nagpur's roughly 1,150 mm of rain a year. Many showers pass in an hour, but heavy bursts can overwhelm drains: on 23 September 2023, about 109 mm fell in a few hours, Ambazari Lake overflowed and parts of the city flooded. The countryside turns green, and the Marbat procession and Ganesh Chaturthi fall in this season. Tadoba's core zones close from 1 July to 30 September, though buffer zones stay open when the tracks allow.

So when should you go?

For sightseeing, choose mid-November to mid-February. For the festival, plan around October and book ahead. For a tiger safari with cooler weather, go between October and March.
