Local tips
Walk rather than drive, as parking on the Mall is restricted in season.
Stroll the Mall at dusk, when the lamps come on along the lake.
Buy woollens at the Tibetan market at the Mallital end.
Look for the handmade candle shops, a Nainital speciality.
Pick up bal mithai in a sealed box if you are carrying it home.
Use the lake-side railing path to keep out of the traffic.
Check which parts of the Lower Mall are open, as sections have closed for repairs.
The spine of the town
The Mall Road, officially Govind Ballabh Pant Marg, runs about 1.5 km along the east shore of the lake from Mallital to Tallital. It was the promenade of the British hill station, and it still carries most of the town's life: hotels, restaurants, candle shops, woollen stalls and a railed path along the water.
Upper and Lower Mall
The road has two levels in places. The Lower Mall runs right beside the lake, and the Upper Mall runs a little higher. The Lower Mall has a history of subsidence: a stretch fell into the lake in 2018, and in September 2025 new cracks near the Grand Hotel closed it to traffic for repairs. Check locally which parts are open to vehicles when you visit.
Traffic and parking
Parking is restricted on the Mall through the busy months, and vehicles are kept off it at many times of day. Leave your car at a public car park, such as the one at Sukhatal or the Flats, or at your hotel, and walk. On the busiest days, police hold tourist cars outside town altogether.
What to do here
Walk it end to end in the evening, when the lamps come on and the lights of the far shore reflect in the water. Stop for tea at one of the old restaurants, buy a handmade candle, and try bal mithai from a sweet shop. At the Mallital end, the Tibetan or Bhotia market near the temple sells woollens and momos.
When to go
Evenings are liveliest, especially in summer. Early mornings are quiet, with joggers and the boats being readied on the shore.
