Best Photo Spots in Nainital
Nainital is a bowl, so most of its good pictures are either down at the water or up on a ridge looking back at it. Mornings are clearer for the peaks; evenings belong to the lake and the Mall.

Start high, finish low
Haze and cloud build over the Kumaon hills as the day warms. If you want the snow peaks, go up early. Snow View Point and Tiffin Top both look out over the town, and both are at their clearest in the first hours of daylight, especially in October and November after the rain has washed the air.
The lake from its own shore
Naini Lake is still and glassy at first light, before the boats go out. Stand at the Tallital end and look north, and the whole lake runs away from you towards the Flats and the hills behind. Later in the day, the rows of coloured boats moored along the shore make the easier subject. From a rowing boat in the middle, the town rises on every side.
The temple on the north shore
The Naina Devi Temple sits right at the water's edge at Mallital. Photography is not allowed near the inner shrine, so frame it from outside: from the lakeside path, or from a boat looking back at the temple with the peak above it. Early morning is the quiet time.
The Mall at dusk
The Mall Road is best in the blue hour, when the lamps come on and the lights of the far shore show in the water. Shoot from the lake railing looking along the curve of the road, rather than into the crowd.
Weather and safety
Mist can close in for days in the monsoon, and some ridge paths get muddy and slippery. Keep to the railed edges at the viewpoints. On a boat, keep your life jacket on while you take pictures.
Questions
Nainital — FAQ
Where can I see the whole of Naini Lake in one frame?
From the ridges. Snow View and Tiffin Top both look down on the full lake, and the ropeway cabin gives a moving view of it on the way up.
Can I take photos from a boat on Naini Lake?
Yes. A rowing boat with a boatman is the steadier option, as you are not busy pedalling. Keep your phone on a strap over the water.
Which month gives the clearest mountain views from Nainital?
October and November usually do, once the monsoon has cleared the air. Winter mornings are often clear too.
Is a drone allowed over Naini Lake?
Do not assume so. Drones need permission in India, and the lake is a busy public place. Ask the local administration before you fly.
