Good to know

Local tips

Wear the life jacket for the whole ride, not just at the stand.

Book boats at the posted boat stands, where the rates are displayed.

Take a rowing boat if you want to take photos rather than pedal.

Go out early in the morning, when the water is calm and the boats are few.

Walk Thandi Sadak on the west shore for a quieter view of the town.

Carry your litter away, as plastic near the lake is fined.

Watch the sailing boats in June from the Mall railing, which costs nothing.

The lake at the centre

Naini Lake is about 1.4 km long and shaped like an eye, with steep wooded hills on every side. The upper, northern end is Mallital, with the temple and the Flats. The lower, southern end is Tallital, where the road from Haldwani arrives. The Mall Road runs along the east shore, and the quieter Thandi Sadak follows the west.

Boating

There are three ways onto the water. Rowing boats come with a boatman and take you across or around the lake. Paddle boats you pedal yourself. From the boat club at Mallital, sailing boats go out in season, and the club's races bring white sails onto the lake in June. Life jackets are compulsory on every boat, and boating stops at dusk. Book from the official boat stands on the shore, where the rates are posted, rather than with anyone who approaches you.

A lake to protect

The lake is the town's water source, and it is under strain. Littering and plastic near the shore are fined, so carry a bottle and your rubbish back with you.

Around the shore

A walk round the lake takes about an hour at an easy pace. The Mall side is busy and lit; Thandi Sadak is quiet and shaded, with the small Pashan Devi shrine on the way. In the morning, the water is often like glass. By afternoon the wind picks up and the boats crowd the middle.
