Good to know

Local tips

Check at the Mallital ropeway station whether it is running before you queue.

Take the first cabins of the day for the best chance of clear peaks.

Walk up the road if the ropeway is closed for wind or maintenance.

Carry a warm layer, as the top is noticeably colder than the lake.

Keep your ropeway ticket for the return trip.

Stay inside the railings on the viewing platforms.

Skip the trip on a hazy day and go on the next clear morning instead.

Above the town

Snow View Point sits at about 2,270 m on Sher ka Danda ridge, above the north-east side of the lake. On a clear day it looks north across the Kumaon ranges to the Himalayan snow line, including Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot. On a hazy day, the view back down over Naini Lake is the reward instead.

The ropeway

An aerial ropeway runs from Mallital, near the Mall Road, to the top. The ride takes a few minutes and gives a moving view of the lake as you rise. The ropeway usually runs from mid-morning to late afternoon, and it stops in strong wind, heavy rain, thick fog and for maintenance. Sources disagree on a fixed weekly closing day, so check at the lower station before you plan around it. Queues are long in peak season, so go early.

By road or on foot

A road also climbs to the top, about 2.5 km from Mallital. Taxis go up, and the walk is steady and shaded, taking about an hour for most people. On days when the ropeway is shut, this is the way up.

At the top

There are viewing platforms, binoculars for hire, snack stalls and small shops. Keep inside the railings, as the ground falls away steeply. In winter, frost and occasional snow settle here before they reach the town.

Plan for the weather

The peaks are clearest in October and November, and often on winter mornings. Cloud builds by midday for much of the year, and in the monsoon the view may be hidden completely.
