Local tips

Start the walk early for the clearest peaks and a cooler climb.

Keep back from the collapsed edge where Dorothy's Seat stood.

Wear closed shoes with grip, as the path is stony and slippery after rain.

Agree the pony rate and the return time before you set off.

Carry water, as stalls at the top may be closed off-season.

Combine it with Lands End, which is close by.

Skip the walk in heavy rain, when landslides are more likely.

A ridge above the lake

Tiffin Top is a viewpoint at about 2,290 m on Ayarpatta hill, on the south-west side of the town. From the ridge you look down over Naini Lake and the rooftops of Nainital, and on clear days north to the Himalayan snow peaks. Its name comes from the picnics, or tiffins, that British residents carried up here.

Dorothy's Seat

The spot is also called Dorothy's Seat, after a memorial bench built by Colonel Kellett for his wife Dorothy, an amateur painter who loved to sit here. After deep cracks opened in the hill, the seat and its platform collapsed in a landslide in August 2024. The view remains, but the old landmark is gone, and parts of the slope are unstable.

Getting there

The walk is about 4 km from town, through oak and pine, and takes around an hour and a half each way at a relaxed pace. Paths go up from the Mallital side and from near Tallital; ask your hotel for the easiest start. Ponies are available for hire for the climb. The path is rough and stony, and slippery after rain.

Lands End

Lands End, another viewpoint, is close by and is often combined with Tiffin Top. It looks west over the valley towards Khurpatal.

Safety

Keep well back from the collapsed edge and any cracked ground. Avoid the walk in heavy monsoon rain, when the hillside is at its weakest. Go in the morning, carry water, and turn back if you see fresh slides or barriers across the path.
