About the Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs about 46 km from Mettupalayam, at the foot of the hills, up to Ooty via Coonoor. Opened in 1908, it is part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the only rack railway in India, using a toothed rack to climb the steepest part of the line between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.
The climb passes through tunnels, over bridges and around sharp curves, with shola forest, tea slopes and wide valley views along the way. The full uphill journey usually takes close to five hours, while shorter rides between Coonoor and Ooty are an easier way to get a taste of the train. Seats are limited and sell out quickly, so booking early is essential.
