Ooty

The 'Queen of Hill Stations' — a colonial-era Nilgiri retreat of tea slopes, botanical gardens, a heritage toy train and cool, eucalyptus-scented air.

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is all cool-climate charm: tea and chocolate, the Toda people's embroidered shawls, boating on the lake, and layers for the mountain chill.

About Ooty

Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is the main town of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu and sits at about 2,200 m in the Western Ghats. The British built it up as a summer retreat in the 19th century, and much of what visitors come for dates from that time: Ooty Lake, dug in 1824, the Government Botanical Garden, laid out in 1848, St Stephen's Church and the rack railway that climbs up from Mettupalayam. Around the town, the hills are covered in tea gardens, eucalyptus and pine plantations, and patches of shola forest and grassland.

The centre is compact but hilly, with Charing Cross, Commercial Road and the lake all close together. Spend a morning at the Botanical Garden, walk down to the lake in the afternoon, and go up Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris, early on a clear day. Pykara Falls and its lake make an easy half-day trip, and a ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway turns the journey itself into part of the visit. Between stops, try the homemade chocolate, a packet of Ooty varkey and a cup of Nilgiri tea.
