About Pykara Falls and Lake
Pykara lies about 23 km from Ooty on the road towards Mysuru. The Pykara River drops over a series of rocky steps here, surrounded by shola forest and open grassland, and a short walk leads down to the falls. A few kilometres further on is Pykara Lake, a reservoir with a boathouse and wide views of the grassy hills.
The river also feeds one of the oldest hydro-electric schemes in South India, so the flow over the falls depends on the season and on water releases. The falls are at their fullest after the monsoon, while the lake is pleasant for boating for most of the year. The drive out, through open grassland and plantations, is one of the most scenic in the Nilgiris.
