October and November
The monsoon has ended, the Betwa is still full and the countryside is green. October afternoons can still be warm, but by November the mornings are fresh and the light is clear. Diwali usually falls in this period, and Vivah Panchami can fall in late November.
December to February
These are the coolest and most comfortable months. Days are sunny and mild, while nights in December and January can drop below 10 °C, so pack warm layers. This is also the busiest time for visitors.
March
The days warm up quickly, but mornings and evenings are still pleasant. Holi is usually celebrated in March, and Ram Navami, Orchha's biggest festival, falls in March or April.
April to June
Summer is very hot and dry, with May the hottest month and daytime temperatures often above 40 °C. Visit the monuments early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and rest in the middle of the day.
July to September
The monsoon brings heavy showers, especially in July and August, with warm, humid days in between. The river and the forest on the far bank are at their greenest, but rafting stops and paths by the river can be slippery.
When Is Orchha Most Crowded?
Orchha is busiest from December to February, on long weekends and on festival days, when pilgrims fill the town for Ram Navami and Vivah Panchami at the Ram Raja Temple. Rooms fill up quickly and the queues for darshan (a view of the deity) get long. See festivals and events in Orchha for the dates to plan around.
For a quieter trip, visit in October, November or March, and start sightseeing early in the day.
Questions
Orchha — FAQ
What is the best month to visit Orchha?
November to February is the most comfortable time, with sunny days and cool nights. October and March are also good, though the afternoons are warmer.
How hot does Orchha get in summer?
Very hot. From April to June, daytime temperatures are often above 40 °C, and May is usually the hottest month. If you visit then, sightsee early and late in the day and carry plenty of water.
Is it worth visiting Orchha in the monsoon?
It can be. From July to September the Betwa runs full, the countryside turns green and there are fewer visitors. Expect heavy showers, slippery riverbanks and no rafting, and check weather updates before you travel.
Can I go rafting on the Betwa all year?
No. Rafting on the Betwa at Orchha is seasonal and stops during the monsoon, when the river runs high. It is a dry-season activity, so check with MP Tourism or the operators in town before you plan around it.
