Orchha
A medieval Bundela capital frozen in time on the Betwa river — soaring palaces, the living Ram Raja temple, and riverside cenotaphs glowing at sunset.
Orchha is Bundela grandeur: the Jahangir Mahal and Raj Mahal, the unique Ram Raja 'king' temple, chhatris on the Betwa, and simple Bundeli food.

About Orchha
Orchha is a small town on the Betwa River in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh, about 16 km from Jhansi. Its name is often said to mean "hidden". The Bundela chief Rudra Pratap Singh founded it in the early 16th century, and it stayed the capital of the Bundela kings until 1783, when the capital moved to Tikamgarh. The palaces, temples and royal memorials they left behind still fill the skyline, and the historic town has been on UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage status since 2019.
Orchha is compact enough to explore on foot. Daily life centres on the Ram Raja Temple, where Ram is worshipped as a king and receives a guard of honour from armed police every day. Spend the morning in the fort and climb the Jahangir Mahal for views over the river. Then walk up to Lakshmi Narayan Temple to see its painted ceilings, and end the day at the chhatris, the royal memorials on the Betwa, as the sun goes down. Leave room for a Bundeli thali, and for poha and jalebi from the stalls near the temple in the morning.
Questions
Orchha — FAQ
What is Orchha famous for?
Orchha is famous for the palaces and temples of its Bundela kings: the Jahangir Mahal and Raj Mahal in the fort, the Ram Raja Temple, where Ram is worshipped as a king, the tall Chaturbhuj Temple and the row of royal chhatris on the Betwa. It is also known for the painted ceilings of Lakshmi Narayan Temple and for simple Bundeli food.
How many days are enough for Orchha?
One full day covers the fort, the Ram Raja and Chaturbhuj temples and sunset at the chhatris. Stay two days to see it at an easy pace and add Lakshmi Narayan Temple, the evening aarti (prayer ceremony) at Ram Raja Temple, the sound-and-light show and a riverside walk or, outside the monsoon, a rafting trip on the Betwa.
What is the best time to visit Orchha?
October to March is the best time, with dry weather and cool mornings, and November to February is the most comfortable stretch. April to June is very hot, often above 40 °C, and July to September brings the monsoon rain. See the best time to visit Orchha for a season-by-season guide.
How do I reach Orchha?
Most visitors come through Jhansi, about 16 km away, which has fast trains from Delhi, Agra and Bhopal. From Jhansi, a taxi or auto-rickshaw to Orchha takes around half an hour. Orchha has its own small railway station, but only a few trains stop there. The nearest major airport is Gwalior, about 120 km away.
Is Orchha a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Not yet. The historic ensemble of Orchha, with its fort, palaces, temples, gardens and chhatris, was added to UNESCO's Tentative List in 2019. That is the first step towards a full World Heritage nomination.
