About Chaturbhuj Temple

Chaturbhuj Temple stands on a high stone platform in the centre of Orchha, right beside Ram Raja Temple. Its name means "the one with four arms", a name for Vishnu. Work on it began in the 16th century under the Bundela king Madhukar Shah, and it was built to house the idol of Ram that his queen brought from Ayodhya. The idol never moved in and is still worshipped in her old palace next door, now the Ram Raja Temple.

The building mixes the look of a temple, a fort and a palace. Its tall spires rise above the rooftops and are easy to spot from the terraces of the fort, and lotus emblems decorate the outer walls. Inside, the halls are plain and very high, and steep, narrow stairs lead up to the roof, with wide views over Orchha, the palaces and the Betwa.
