About Orchha Fort and the Jahangir Mahal
Orchha Fort stands on an island in the Betwa, reached from the end of the main street over an old stone bridge with many arches. Inside its walls are several palaces built by the Bundela kings. The Raj Mahal, the older royal palace, looks plain from outside but has rooms painted with gods, mythical animals and scenes of daily life. The smaller Rai Praveen Mahal was built for Rai Praveen, a poet and musician at the Orchha court.
The best-known building is the Jahangir Mahal, built by Bir Singh Deo in the early 17th century to welcome the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who stayed for a single night. It is a symmetrical square palace with eight large domes, hanging balconies and latticed windows around a central courtyard. Steep stairs lead to the upper terraces, which look out over the Betwa and the temples of the town.
