About Ram Raja Temple

Ram Raja Temple is the heart of Orchha and the reason most pilgrims come. It is unusual because it was a palace before it was a temple. Local tradition says Queen Ganesh Kunwari, wife of King Madhukar Shah, brought an idol of Ram from Ayodhya in the 16th century. She kept it in her palace while Chaturbhuj Temple was being built for it. When the time came to move it, the idol would not move, so the palace became the temple.

Here Ram is worshipped as the king of Orchha as well as a god. He is offered food fit for a king, and armed police give him a guard of honour every day, as they would a ruler. The pink-and-yellow temple, with its marble courtyard, is busiest around the morning and evening aarti (prayer ceremonies). Phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside, so take your photos from the square outside and enjoy the visit without them.
