About Lakshmi Narayan Temple
Lakshmi Narayan Temple stands on a low hill about 1 km west of Orchha's centre, joined to the town by a stone path from Ram Raja Temple. It was built in the 17th century and is dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi, but it looks more like a small fort than a temple, with high brick walls and slots for cannon.
The real reason to come is inside. The walls and ceilings of its halls are covered in paintings made between the 17th and 19th centuries. They show scenes from the Ramayana and the life of Krishna, Bundela kings with their armies, hunting and daily life, and British officers, including scenes linked to the 1857 uprising. The temple is much quieter than the town below, and the hilltop gives a view back towards Orchha's spires.
