About Jata Shankar

Jata Shankar is a cave shrine to Lord Shiva in a deep ravine about 1.5 km from Pachmarhi town. Huge boulders hang over the gorge, and the rock formations are said to look like Shiva's matted hair (jata), which gives the shrine its name. Inside, natural stone lingams are worshipped, and a formation on the cave's ceiling is said to resemble Sheshnag, the hundred-headed serpent.

Local tradition says this is where Lord Shiva hid from the demon Bhasmasur. You reach the cave by a walk and a flight of steps down into the cool, shaded ravine. It is an active place of worship and gets very busy at Mahashivratri, when pilgrims queue here as well as at Bada Mahadev and Chauragarh.
