A village above the Lidder

Aru is a small village about 12 km from Pahalgam up the western branch of the Lidder. Log and stone houses sit at the edge of a wide meadow, with forest behind and high ridges all around. It is higher and quieter than Pahalgam, and the air is noticeably cooler.

Access now

Aru reopened to visitors in late September 2025, after being closed following the April 2025 attack at Baisaran. As at other reopened sites, security checks are in place and visitors have at times been asked to leave by late afternoon. The trip must be made in a local union taxi from Pahalgam. Check the current rules at the taxi stand before you go.

What to do

Walk across the meadow and along the river, or hire a pony for the short ride to viewpoints above the village. Rates are fixed by the local union; agree the route and time first. A few simple guesthouses and tea stalls operate in season. In summer, Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherd families camp in the pastures above.

A base for treks

Aru has long been the start of treks to the Kolahoi glacier and to the Tarsar and Marsar lakes. These are multi-day routes that need a guide, camping gear and fitness. Several alpine routes around Pahalgam were reported closed in 2026, so confirm with a registered trekking operator and the local authorities that your route is open before planning.

When to go

The meadow is green from late May to September and golden in autumn. The road can be blocked by snow in winter. Mornings are clearest.
