Check access first
Since April 2025, access to Pahalgam's side valleys has been controlled, and it changes. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley reopened in 2025. Baisaran remained closed in 2026, and Chandanwari was mainly open to registered pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra. Ask at the taxi stand or your hotel the evening before.
Betaab Valley
Betaab is the easiest big view: a flat green meadow with a clear stream running through it, pines on the slopes and snow ridges at the head of the valley. Arrive at opening for soft light and an empty meadow. Shoot from the wooden bridge over the stream, looking upstream towards the peaks.
Aru Valley
Aru is a small village of log and stone houses on a meadow above the western Lidder. Early morning, when smoke rises from the houses and mist sits on the grass, is the time to be there. A slightly raised spot on the edge of the meadow gives a frame of houses, meadow and forest together.
The Lidder in town
The Lidder River runs right through Pahalgam, and the riverbanks near the town bridge and the parks along it are good for long-exposure photos of white water against dark rocks. Early morning and the last light of the day are best; midday glare flattens the water.
Being respectful
Pahalgam's visitor economy has been through a hard time, and people are welcoming. Still, ask before photographing shepherd families, pony handlers and women. Security personnel and checkpoints should not be photographed. Drones are not allowed without official permission, and in the current security set-up they are best left at home.
Practical notes
Light changes fast in the narrow valleys, and the sun leaves the valley floors early. Reopened sites have sometimes asked visitors to leave by late afternoon, so plan golden-hour shots in town rather than in the side valleys.
Questions
Pahalgam — FAQ
Is Baisaran open for photography?
No. Baisaran has remained closed to visitors since the attack of April 2025. Betaab and Aru valleys are the open alternatives for meadow views.
Can I fly a drone in Pahalgam?
Not without official permission, which is hard to get. Given the current security arrangements, leave the drone at home.
What time do Pahalgam's side valleys close?
It varies. In 2026 reopened sites have at times required visitors to leave by around 4 pm. Ask at the taxi stand for the current rule.
Where can I photograph the Lidder near town?
The riverbanks near the main bridge and the parks along the water are easy to reach and good for early-morning shots.
