A meadow named after a film

Betaab Valley lies about 15 km from Pahalgam on the road to Chandanwari. It was known as Hagan valley until the Hindi film Betaab was shot here in 1983, and the new name stuck. The valley floor is a flat green meadow, fenced and landscaped as a park, with a clear stream running through it, pine and fir on the slopes, and snow ridges at its head.

Access now

Betaab was among the first Pahalgam sites to reopen after the closures that followed the April 2025 attack at Baisaran. It is ticketed, with security checks at the gate. In 2026 visitors were at times asked to leave by around 4 pm, so go in the morning. Trips must be made in a local union taxi from the Pahalgam taxi stand; the fare usually covers Betaab along with other points on the Chandanwari road when those are open.

What to do

Walk the paths along the stream, cross the small wooden bridges, and sit on the grass with the mountains around you. It is an easy, level outing that suits families and older visitors. There are tea and snack stalls near the gate. The water is glacier-cold and fast in places; do not let children play in it unsupervised.

When to go

The meadow is green from late May to September. Autumn turns it golden, and winter covers it in snow, when access depends on the road. Weekends and the Yatra weeks are the busiest.

Before you go

Ask at the taxi stand the day before whether Betaab is open, as access has changed several times since 2025.
