Two rivers, one town
The Lidder rises from glaciers above Pahalgam. Its eastern branch flows down from Sheshnag past Chandanwari; its western branch comes from the Kolahoi glacier past Aru. The two meet at Pahalgam, and the combined river rushes south through the town over boulders, under pine-covered slopes, towards the Jhelum.
Walking by the river
The river is Pahalgam's backdrop, and the simplest pleasure here is walking along it. Paths and small parks line the banks near the main bridge and along the town. Early morning is quiet and cool, with mist on the water. Sit on a rock, drink a kahwa, and listen to the water.
Rafting
White-water rafting runs on stretches of the Lidder below Pahalgam in season, usually from around May. The rafting point at Yanner reopened in September 2025 after the post-April closures. Operators provide life jackets and helmets and a short safety briefing. Water levels are highest and fastest in early summer with snowmelt. Choose a registered operator and follow the guide's instructions.
Trout fishing
The Lidder is known for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing needs a licence from the Jammu and Kashmir Fisheries Department, and beats have seasons and rules. Ask your hotel how to get a permit.
Safety
The water is glacier-cold and the current is strong, even where it looks calm. Do not wade in, and keep children back from the edge. Rocks near the water are slippery. After heavy rain the river rises fast.
