Where the pilgrimage begins

Chandanwari lies about 16 km from Pahalgam, at around 2,900 m, where the road up the East Lidder ends. It is the starting point of the traditional route of the Amarnath Yatra, which climbs from here past Pissu Top, Sheshnag lake and Panchtarni to the Amarnath cave. For much of the year a snow bridge spans the river nearby, packed snow left over from winter avalanches, and it often lasts into summer.

Access now

Since the April 2025 attack at Baisaran, Chandanwari has been restricted to general tourists for long periods. In April 2026 it was reported still inaccessible, and in July 2026 it remained on the restricted list. During the Amarnath Yatra, which ran from 3 July to 28 August in 2026, it serves as a base camp for registered pilgrims. Ask at the Pahalgam taxi stand or the tourism office whether tourist trips are allowed on the day you plan to go.

For pilgrims

Pilgrims must register in advance with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and carry a compulsory health certificate. The walk from Chandanwari to the cave usually takes three to four days, crossing passes above 4,000 m. Ponies and palanquins can be hired at fixed rates. Weather can turn to snow at any time.

When it is open to visitors

When open, Chandanwari is visited as a half-day trip by union taxi, combined with Betaab Valley on the same road. Visitors come for the snow bridge, the cold mountain air and the sense of standing at the start of the pilgrim trail.

Before you go

Check access the day before. Do not try to walk beyond the checkpoints; the route is controlled.
