Local tips

Visit the Bihar Museum first, so the empty lawns make sense.

Check whether the site is open before going on a Monday.

Go in the late afternoon, when the lawns are shaded and cooler.

Look for the polished Mauryan pillar fragment near the excavated area.

Spend ten minutes in the small site museum for the finds from the dig.

Stop on the way to Patna City rather than making a special trip.

Carry water, as there is little to buy inside the park.

Where Pataliputra lies underground

Kumhrar, about 5 km east of Patna Junction, is where excavations in the early 20th century found the remains of the Mauryan capital. The most important find was a great assembly hall with 80 polished sandstone pillars in rows of eight by ten. It is usually dated to the time of Ashoka, in the 3rd century BCE, and some scholars link it to the Third Buddhist Council. Later digs found remains of a hospital-monastery, the Arogya Vihar, from the Gupta period.

What you can see today

Be ready for a park more than a ruin. Most of the hall's remains lie under the ground; groundwater kept flooding the excavation, and the pits have been covered over to protect what is left. What stands out now is a single polished pillar fragment, displayed on the lawn, and the outlines of the excavated areas. A small site museum shows pottery, coins and terracottas found here.

Why it is still worth an hour

Standing here, you are in the centre of what was one of the largest cities in the ancient world. The lawns are shaded and quiet, which is rare in Patna, and the site sits on the way from the city centre to Patna City. It helps to read a little about the Mauryas before you go, or visit the Bihar Museum first.

Practical details

Kumhrar is a protected site with a small entry fee. It is often reported as closed on Mondays, and hours can vary, so check before you go. Carry water; there are few shops inside.

Combining it

Stop here on the way to or from Takht Sri Patna Sahib, which is further east. A sattu sharbat from a roadside cart outside is the right drink on a hot day.
