Good to know

Local tips

Come before 7 am on a Tuesday or Saturday if you want to avoid the longest queues.

Buy naivedyam laddu only at the official temple counters.

Keep a close eye on your phone and wallet in the crowd near the station.

Ask at the gate before taking out a phone or camera inside the shrine.

Photograph the front of the temple from across the road, where you are out of the queue.

Avoid the station area on Ram Navami unless you are coming for darshan.

Leave your bag at the hotel if you can; the entry is quicker without one.

Patna's Hanuman temple

Mahavir Mandir stands right outside Patna Junction railway station, and for many people arriving by train it is the first stop in the city. It is dedicated to Hanuman, called Mahavir here, and draws tens of thousands of devotees on an ordinary day. The shrine dates back to the early 18th century, when an ascetic of the Ramanandi sect is said to have set it up. The present building went up after a major renovation that began in the 1980s under the temple trust led by Acharya Kishore Kunal.

Naivedyam laddu

The temple is famous for its naivedyam, a rich laddu of fine boondi, ghee, cashew and cardamom. It was started in 1993 and was modelled on the Tirupati laddu. Buy it from the temple counters rather than from outside stalls, which may sell imitations. On Tuesdays the temple makes several tonnes of it.

Darshan and crowds

Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman's days, and on those days the queues stretch round the block. Ram Navami, usually in March or April, is the busiest day of the year, when lakhs of people come and the gates open in the middle of the night. On other weekdays, darshan in the early morning is usually quick. Leave shoes at the counter and dress modestly.

The temple's work

The trust runs several hospitals in Patna from temple income, and many pilgrims know it for that as much as for the shrine.

Nearby

Patna Junction is next door, so the temple is an easy stop before a train. Basant Vihar on Fraser Road serves a vegetarian breakfast nearby. Golghar and Gandhi Maidan are about 2 km north.
