Dress for sunrise
Almost everyone in Pelling is up before dawn to watch the peaks, standing still on an open terrace for half an hour. That is when you feel the cold. Bring a warm jacket, a woollen cap and gloves, even in April or October. From December to February mornings can be near or below freezing, and hotel rooms are not always well heated, so pack something warm to sleep in too.
Layers for the day
By late morning the sun is strong at this height and a T-shirt with a light fleece is often enough. The change comes fast when the cloud closes in, so carry the next layer in your bag. Sunscreen and sunglasses matter more than people expect.
Monasteries
Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling are working monasteries. Wear long trousers or a long skirt and cover your shoulders. You take shoes off at the door of the prayer halls, so slip-on shoes and clean socks make it easier. Hats come off inside.
Shoes for paths
The walk to Rabdentse is a forest path that turns muddy after rain. The path up to Sanga Choeling is steep. Walking shoes or light boots with a good grip suit both. Leave sandals for the hotel.
The rains
From June to September it rains most days. A proper rain jacket works better than an umbrella on windy ridges. Quick-dry trousers, spare socks and a cover for your bag will keep a day trip bearable. Leeches are common on forest paths in the wet months, so long socks help.
Sikkimese dress
At festivals you will see the bakhu, the Bhutia wrap-robe tied at the waist, and the Lepcha and Nepali dress of the other communities. Handwoven woollen shawls and caps are sold in Pelling and Gangtok and make a useful extra layer.
