Best time to visit Pune

October to February is the most comfortable time in Pune, with warm days and cool nights. The monsoon from June to September is the season for Sinhagad and the ghats, and April and May are the hardest months for walking the old town.

🌧️ Monsoon

October to February: the easy months

After the rains end in late September or early October, the air clears and the hills stay green for a few weeks. October can still feel warm in the afternoon. November to February is dry, with pleasant days and cool nights. December and January mornings can be cold enough for a jacket, and the Sawai Gandharva music festival usually takes place in December. This is the best time for long walks in the old peths and clear views from Sinhagad.

March to May: hot and dry

The heat builds through March. April and May are the hottest months, with afternoon highs close to 40 °C. Nights are cooler than in Mumbai, but walking at midday is tiring. Visit monuments early in the morning, rest after lunch and go out again in the evening. A mango mastani helps.

June to September: the monsoon

The monsoon usually reaches Pune in June. The city gets steady rain and cloudy skies, but not the extreme downpours of Mahabaleshwar or Lonavala. The ghats to the west turn green, and Sinhagad is covered in mist. That makes it the most popular time for the fort, especially at weekends. Paths get slippery and small landslides can close roads after heavy rain, so check conditions before you drive up.

Ganeshotsav

The ten-day Ganesh festival falls in August or September. Pandals fill every neighbourhood, dhol-tasha groups practise and perform in the streets, and the immersion processions on the last day go on late into the night. Book rooms early and expect road closures in the old town.

Which month to pick

  • For comfortable sightseeing: November to February.
  • For mist and green hills at Sinhagad: July to September, on a weekday.
  • For festival crowds and colour: Ganeshotsav in August or September.
  • Least comfortable: late April and May.
