Best time to visit Puri

Puri is best from November to February, when the sea is calmer and the air is dry. The festival calendar pulls the other way, since Rath Yatra falls right at the start of the monsoon.

November to February

Warm days, cool mornings and little rain. The sea is calmer than at other times, which makes the flagged swimming zones more usable, and this is the season for Chilika's migratory birds and the Konark Festival in early December. It is also peak season, with higher room rates and busy weekends, especially over Christmas and New Year.

March to mid-June

Hot and very humid. The sea breeze helps on the beach, but the temple lanes are stifling by midday. Do the temple early and spend the afternoon indoors. Snana Purnima, the deities' ceremonial bath, falls in June and draws big crowds; after it the deities are withdrawn from view for about two weeks.

Mid-June to September

The monsoon usually reaches the Odisha coast in mid-June, not July. Rain comes in heavy spells, the sea turns rough and bathing is restricted. Rath Yatra falls in this season, usually in late June or July, so if you come for it you will almost certainly get wet. Outside the festival weeks, this is Puri's quietest time.

October and November: check the forecast

October brings the end of the rains and good light, but October and November are also cyclone months on this coast. Recent storms have forced tourists to leave Puri at short notice. Most weeks pass without trouble; watch the weather service's alerts and book flexible rooms.

About Chilika in the monsoon

Some summaries suggest Chilika is at its best in the monsoon. For birds, it is not: the migratory flocks arrive around November and leave by March. The monsoon lagoon is green and quiet, but boats may be limited in rough weather.

Summary

  • Most comfortable: November to February.
  • For Rath Yatra: late June or July, book months ahead.
  • Quietest: August and September, outside festival days.
