Local tips

Check in Puri whether the temple has reopened before you make the trip.

Walk Grand Road from the Lion Gate to Gundicha early in the morning.

Look for the Mausi Maa temple on the same road.

Carry change for the small entry fee planned at reopening.

Expect phone and shoe deposit rules like those at the main temple.

During Rath Yatra, watch the parked chariots from the side lanes, not the crush in front.

Dress modestly, as at any active temple in Puri.

The destination of Rath Yatra

Gundicha is the temple the chariots are pulled to during Rath Yatra. It stands at the far end of Grand Road, about 3 km from the Jagannath temple, inside a walled garden. The deities stay here for about a week before the return journey, Bahuda Yatra.

Who Gundicha was

The temple is named after Queen Gundicha, wife of the legendary King Indradyumna, who is credited with founding the Jagannath cult in Puri. The raised stone platform inside, the Adapa Mandapa, is also called the birthplace of the deities, and they sit on it during their stay.

Access right now

For several years the temple has been closed to regular visitors outside the festival. In September 2026, local reports said it would reopen in the first week of October with a small entry fee, free entry for senior citizens and children, and only part of the complex open at first. Things may change, so ask in Puri before you go.

Who can enter

The temple is managed by the Jagannath temple administration. Rules for non-Hindus have not been clearly stated for the reopening. Check at the gate rather than assuming.

Rath Yatra week

In June or July, the three chariots are parked outside Gundicha for the week, and the lanes around it turn into a fair. The Mausi Maa temple, where the deities stop for poda pitha on the way back, is on the same road.

The rest of the year

Even with the gates closed, Grand Road's walk from the Lion Gate to Gundicha is worth doing early in the morning.
