Local tips
Swim only between the lifeguard flags or buoys, and never after dark.
Come at sunrise, when the fishermen launch their boats.
Head to the Blue Flag stretch for cleaner sand and toilets.
Do not photograph cremations near Swargadwar.
Keep valuables minimal; there is nowhere secure to leave them while you paddle.
Rinse sand off camera gear the same day; the salt is corrosive.
Try dahibara aludam from a beach cart in the evening.
A beach that faces the sunrise
Puri's beach runs for several kilometres along the Bay of Bengal, and because it faces east-south-east, the sun rises straight out of the sea. Sunrise is when the beach is at its best: fishermen pushing boats through the surf, pilgrims bathing, and joggers on the promenade.
Three stretches
- Swargadwar: the busiest part, close to the town. Pilgrims bathe here, and the cremation ground of the same name is nearby, so be respectful with cameras.
- Blue Flag (Golden) Beach: a managed section with clean sand, toilets, a marked bathing zone and lifeguards. It held Blue Flag certification from 2020.
- The fishing end: to the north, near the fishermen's village, colourful boats line the sand in the morning.
Swimming safely
This is the most important thing on this page. Puri's sea has strong rip currents that shift with the tide, and people drown most years, often young men swimming outside the patrolled areas. Swim only in the zones marked by buoys or flags where lifeguards are on duty. Stay out after dark, after drinking, and whenever the red flag is up. In the monsoon, bathing is often restricted altogether.
Sand art
Puri is home to sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik, and sculptures appear on the beach regularly, especially around festivals.
Evenings
After sunset the promenade fills with families, snack stalls and camel and horse rides. It is lively and safe, though crowded at weekends.
